WHO ARE WE?
Transcultural Adoptive Families (TAF) was formed to provide
support, education, and cultural activities for famililes with internationally
and transracially adopted children. This Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based group
addresses various issues concerning adoption, including cultural heritage, parenting
skills, and building self-esteem in our children. We also provide a positive focus
on adoption as an alternate method of buiilding a family. We try to instill a
sense of ethnic pride in our children and create an environment, in which all
people and all cultures are honored. TAF also supports several orphanages around
the world through charitable fund raisers.
TAF has 50+ member families at any time. Some of our families consist of Caucasian parents who have adopted
African American or biracial children. Other families have adopted internationally from countries like China, Korea,
Cambodia, India, the Ukraine, Romania, Peru, Brazil, Panama, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
TAF membership dues are per year. Dues go to cover administrative costs, such as publishing and mailing of our 10- to 12-page
newsletter, which is mailed January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st every year. Dues also help to pay for food at
some of our events, such as pizza and "Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundaes" at our annual Halloween party. In addition, the annual
dues help us to support orphanages in Latin America and provide them with much needed food, clothing, and school supplies.
TAF'S QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER: TAF publishes a quarterly newsletter. In each
issue you will find a member family spotlighted and in many cases, a family's
adoption story. In addition, we feature an international recipe and information
on upcoming TAF events. We also publish a section called "Resources for
Adoptive Families," which may cover anything from purchasing international dolls
to subscribing to adoption listservs. Finally, the newsletter informs members
of familys' new arrivals or referrals.
